The Little Ringed Plover breeds across much of Europe and Asia and migrates south to Africa, the Middle East, southern China and Indonesia. The populations in India, south-east Asia and Papua New Guinea are resident all year round. See the distribution map at Birdlife International.

In adult summer plumage it is distinguished from Ringed Plover C. hiaticula by its yellow eye-ring and its all black bill.
