The Lanner Falcon is distributed in Africa, south and south-east Europe and the Middle East. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. It is found in a variety of habitats but mostly in open, dry areas.

Lanner Falcon, Merzouga, Morocco, April 2014 - click for larger image The sub-species from north-west Africa shown here, F. b. erlangeri is the smallest and palest with a creamy-buff crown and very little streaking below.

It feeds mainly on small and medium-sized birds such as lark, pigeon and quail though larger birds such as ducks and francolins are also taken. Small mammals are included in the diet.
