The Eurasian Thick-knee breeds in southern Europe through to central Asia and south to north Africa and Pakistan. It migrates south during the winter mainly to Africa north of the Equator. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. It is found in semi-arid and arid grasslands or semi-desert and in coastal areas. It requires open ground where it can walk or run to catch its prey of invertebrates, small vertebrates, insects, earthworms, etc..
