The Cattle Egret is now a fairly cosmopolitan bird that originated in Africa and southern Spain but has, in the last 100 years or so invaded the Americas, Asia and Australia. See the distribution map at Heron Conservation.

Cattle Egret, Asni Valley, Morocco, April 2014 - click for larger image The nest can be built in a variety of sites such as trees or reed beds. The male collects the nest materials and passes them to the female who builds the nest.

These photos are of the nominate sub-species. The sub-species B. i. coromandus found in south-east Asia and Australia is larger and considerably more orange-buff in the breeding season.
