The Scarlet Minivet is distributed from the Himalayas east to southern and eastern China, south through Myanmar, Thailand and Indochina to the Malaysian Peninsula and Indonesia and in western and southern India and Sri Lanka.

It is found in a variety of forest types on hills and mountains up to about 2,100 metres. It feeds mainly on insects and is often seen in mixed-species flocks.

It is distinguished from Short-billed Minivet P. brevirostris and Long-tailed Minivet P. ethologus by the isolated patch of red on the secondaries.
