The Rufous-bellied Niltava is distributed in the Himalayas, in central and southern China and in Myanmar, northern Thailand and northern Indochina.

It is found in the undergrowth of a variety of forest habitats including broadleaved and mixed forest as well as secondary and degraded forest.

This flycatcher is very similar to Small Niltava N. macgrigoriae but is considerable larger with an orange belly. It has the same bright blue crown and shoulder patch.

There is a recording on xeno-canto and additional information on Avibase .
