The Rosy Pipit breeds from the extreme west of China through the Himalayas to central and southern China. It migrates southwards to winter in northern India, Bangladesh and northern Thailand.

In breeding plumage it has a pinkish wash to the underparts with bold dark streaks on the flanks. In non-breeding plumage the pinkish wash disappears and the streaks cover most of the breast and flanks.
