The Plain Mountain Finch is distributed in the mountains of central Asia from eastern Afghanistan through the Himalayas to north-east Burma.

It is found on alpine slopes during the summer and in forest clearings during the winter.

It is boldly streaked above and has well-defined wing-bars.
