The Plain Mountain-finch is distributed in the mountains of central Asia from eastern Afghanistan through the Himalayas to north-east Burma. See the distribution map at Birdlife International.

It is found on alpine slopes during the summer and in forest clearings during the winter.

It is boldly streaked above and has well-defined wing-bars.
