The Ashy Drongo is distributed from eastern Afghanistan to southern China and south to Indonesia. Some populations such as the ones in the Himalayas migrate south to India and Sri Lanka outside the breeding season. It is found in forest and woodland.

It is dark blue-grey with a long and deeply forked tail. The eye is normally red.
