The Ashy Bulbul is distributed from north India to southern China and Indochina. It is found in forest, forest edges and in bamboo mainly at between 700 and 1,600 metres.

It has a grey crest which is often raised and a grey back. The head shows a black mask and brownish ear-coverts while the wings have an olive-yellow panel.
