The Yellow-necked Francolin is distributed in east Africa from Ethiopia south to northern Tanzania. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. It is found in dry bush and wooded grassland from sea level up to about 1,600 metres where it scratches the ground searching for tubers, seeds and fruits.

As its name implies it has a distinctive bare yellow throat as well as a black bill and reddish skin around the eyes.
