The Yellow-crowned Gonolek is distributed in West Africa from Mauritania to Chad. It is found in dense undergrowth of inland and coastal savanna often near rivers and streams.

A bush-shrike, it feeds on insects foraging mainly on leaf litter on the ground but occasionally perches in the open.

It has various calls some of which are described as a whiplash sound.
