The White-headed Buffalo-weaver is distributed from the Horn of Africa south to Tanzania and west to South Sudan. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. It is found in acacia bush country and wooded grassland up to 1,900 metres.

It forages on the ground mainly for insects but also fruit and seeds.

For many years the scientific name was thought to refer to an unknown collector but it now transpires to have originated in the name of a frontier post in Ethiopia.
