The Whistling Cisticola is distributed in tropical Africa from Senegal to South Sudan and also on the southern border of the Congo Basin. For a distribution map see Birdlife International. It is found in tall savanna grassland and open woodland.

It is greyish brown with rufous edging to the flight feathers. Underparts are whitish with greyish-rufous flanks to the breast and belly.

Its song is a short and melodious whistled phrase usually made from a prominent perch on top of a bush.
