The Western Violet-backed Sunbird is distributed within the tropics from Senegal in West Africa to Mozambique in the east. It is found in savanna woodland, gallery forest, mangroves and gardens.

Male Western Violet-backed Sunbird, Mole National Park, Ghana, June 2011 - click for larger image The male, seen here in photos 1 and 2, is glossy violet above and on the throat with dark brown upperwings and pure white underparts below the throat. The bill is rather short and straight compared to most sunbirds. The female (photo 3) is brown above with a white supercilium. It is white below with pale lemon-yellow on the belly, flanks and undertail coverts.
