The Eastern Violet-backed Sunbird is distributed in the Horn of Africa and south to Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. It is found in semi-arid areas such as acacia bush up to about 1,250 metres.

This is a male but not in full breeding plumage.
