The Vitelline Masked Weaver is distributed in a broad band south of the Sahara from Senegal to Somalia and Tanzania. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. It is found in a variety of bush and wooded habitats up to 2,000 metres.

Vitelline Masked Weaver, Lake Chelekcheka, Ethiopia, January 2016 - click for larger image The breeding male has red eyes, a black mask with a narrow band above the bill. The crown has a deep chestnut wash and the legs are pinkish-red.

Vitelline refers to the colour of deep yellow with a tinge of red and comes from the Latin for egg yolk.
