Speke's Weaver is distributed in Ethiopia, Somalia, Kenya and Tanzania. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. It is found in small flocks in open woodland and acacia up to about 2,100 metres.

It is named after Captain John Speke, a British explorer and the first European to see Lake Victoria.
