The Velvet-mantled Drongo is distributed in tropical Africa from Sierra Leone to Uganda and south to northern Angola. They are found in forest at the edges and in clearings usually high up but below the canopy.

It is similar to Fork-tailed Drongo Dicrurus adsimilis but has a velvet-black, unglossy mantle.
