The Stone Partridge is distributed in a broad band north of the Equator and south of the Sahara from Senegal in the west to Ethiopia in the east. It is found in dense vegetation on rocky hillsides or near boulders in savanna habitat.

Sone Partridge, Mole National Park, Ghana, June 2011 - click for larger image It looks and acts a bit like a chicken and usually cocks its tail. Its legs are dark red and there is dull red skin around the eyes.

Its distinctive song is a series of flute-like rising notes.
