The Speckled Tinkerbird is distributed in Africa south of the Sahara from Sierra Leone to Uganda and south into the Congo Basin. It is found in forest and forest edges where it forages for fruit and insects mainly in the canopy and sub-canopy.

The song is a series of notes starting off singly, then doubled, then tripled and then becoming 4 to 5 rapid notes.
