The Speckle-fronted Weaver is distributed in a band across Africa on the southern edge of the Sahara from Mauritania to Ethiopia and Eritrea with a disjunct population from South Sudan to Tanzania. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. Lalibela in Ethiopia is slightly outside its normally accepted range.

Speckle-fronted Weaver, Lalibela, Ethiopia, January 2016 - click for larger image It is found in drys scrub and wooded grassland where it feeds on the ground eating mainly seeds.

It is one of the smallest of the weaver family but does not form large breeding colonies being found either as single nests or small groups.
