The Grey-capped Social-weaver is distributed in eastern Africa from Sudan and southern Ethiopia south to Tanzania. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. It is found in dry, open woodland.

It is colonial and there can be over 100 nests in a single tree. It is often found in the same nesting area as Black-capped Social-weaver P. cabanisi.
