The Short-winged Cisticola is distributed throughout much of tropical Africa where it is found in wooded grassland especially where there are dead trees and termite mounds. There is a distribution map at Birdlife International.

It is dull brown above and almost white below with buffy flanks.

It forages low down for insects including caterpillars, termites, grasshoppers and beetles but flies to trees or bushes when disturbed.

The song is a series of 2 to 3 high-pitched notes falling in pitch and repeated continuously
