The Senegal Thick-knee is distributed in Africa south of the Sahara and north of the Equator as well as along the Nile Valley. There is a distribution map at Birdlife International. It is found beside rivers and lakes and in mangroves as well as grassland close to water.

It feeds mainly at night and exclusively on land where its prey consists of invertebrates, reptiles, amphibians and small rodents.

Its song is a series of clear, piping notes rising in pitch and speed before falling away.
