The Sakalava Weaver is endemic to Madagascar where it is found in the north, west and south of the country. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. It is found in open country and moderately wooded habitats such as semi-arid thorn scrub up to 700 metres.

They are very gregarious and can be found in flocks of up to 250.

These photos are of males in breeding plumage. The non-breeding male has a grey head while the female has a grey head with a light tan supercilium and cheek.
