The Rufous Chatterer is distributed from Ethiopia and South Sudan to Tanzania. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. It is found in dry bush and near rivers up to 1,650 metres.

It has bright rufous underparts and pale yellow eyes.

The calls are not very babbler-like being softer and higher in pitch.
