The Rufous-tailed Rock-thrush breeds from southern and central Europe through the Middle East to central Asia and Mongolia. All populations winter in sub-Saharan Africa. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. It breeds on rocky mountain sides but wintering habitat is much more varied and less specific.

Photo 1 shows a male in non-breeding plumage while photo 2 shows a female.

In its winter quarters it does not sing or call.
