The Forest Rock-thrush is endemic to Madagascar where it is found in a variety of forest, woodland and scrub habitats at between 800 and 2,500 metres. See the distribution map at Birdlife International.

Some authorities have treated Benson's Rock-thrush M. bensoni as a separate species in the past but genetic studies now include it with this species. It is noticeably paler with a scratchier song.
