The Purple Roller is distributed in most of tropical Africa south of the Sahara with the exception of forested areas. See the distribution map at Birdlife International.

Rufous-crowned Roller, Kalakpa, Ghana, May 2011 - click for larger image It is found in open woodland where it perches conspicuously on high trees and utility wires. From these vantage points it forages for large insects and small vertebrates on the ground.

Compared to most rollers it is comparatively dull but has a white forehead and supercilium while underparts are brownish-pink with white streaks.

It has a variety of calls involving cackling, muffled and nasal notes.
