The Blue-moustached Bee-eater is distributed in West Africa from Sierra Leone to western Cameroon. It is found in small clearings in primary forest and is classified as Near Threatened by Birdlife International because of the threat to this type of habitat.

Many authorities still classify it as a sub-species of Blue-headed Bee-eater M. muelleri from which it differs in having a much darker forehead and crown and a blue "moustache" under the black mask.
