Ruff breed from north-west Europe across the north of Europe and Asia in coastal and forest tundra as well as marshes, deltas and swampy meadows. They migrate to southern Europe, southern Asia and sub-Saharan Africa during the northern winter. See the distribution map at Birdlife International.
