The Curlew Sandpiper breeds on the tundra of Arctic Siberia and migrates in the winter to sub-Saharan Africa, the Middle East, south and south-east Asia and Australasia. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. It is classified as Near Threatened.

Curlew Sandpiper, Ifaty Salt Pans, Madagascar, November 2016 - click for larger image It has a long, gently down-curved black bill, a longish neck and medium length black legs. Breeding plumage shows a chestnut-red face and underparts. These photos are of non-breeding plumage where upperparts are grey with dark shafts and pale fringes. there is a long, white supercilium and dark lores.
