The Red-chested Swallow is distributed in West Africa from Senegal to Togo with disjunct populations in the Ethiopian highlands and along the River Congo. It is found in open habitats such as savanna, marshes and rivers.

It is similar to Barn Swallow H. rustica but the dark rufous throat extends to the upper breast and the remaining underparts are a purer white. The outer tail feathers are shorter.
