The Red-bellied Parrot is distributed from Ethiopia and Somalia to northern Tanzania. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. It is found in semi-arid and arid bush and woodland habitats and seems particularly attracted to Commiphora bushes.

The male has an orange breast band and underwing coverts both of which are lacking in the female.
