The Black Parrot is endemic to Madagascar where it is found in both dense and spiny forest up to 2,050 metres. See the distribution map at Birdlife International.

Black Parrot, Berenty, Madagascar 2016 - click for larger image It is smaller than the similar Vasa Parrot C. vasa with some other differences. The bare skin round the eye of the Vasa Parrot almost reaches the bill while in the Black Parrot it does not.
