The Purple Grenadier is distributed from South Sudan and Ethiopia south to Tanzania. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. It is found in open woodland, bush and semi-arid areas up to 1,600 metres.

Purple Grenadier, Yabello, Ethiopia, January 2016 - click for larger image The male has a brown head with blue face marks and is deep violet from its breast to the vent and rump. the tail is black. The female is similar above but is pale brown below with white barring.
