The Grey Firefinch is distributed in a band in Africa south of the Sahara and north of the Equator. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. It is found in wooded savanna and moist thickets where it feeds on the ground on grass seeds and termites.

Male Black-faced Firefinch, Mole, Ghana, June 2011 - click for larger image Many authorities regard it as one of three sub-species of Black-faced Firefinch Lagonosticta larvata but which look significantly different from each other. The HBW and Birdlife International checklist resolves this by splitting the species so that the one found in Ghana is Grey Firefinch Lagonosticta nigricollis.
