The Palm-nut Vulture is distributed Africa south of the Sahara as far as north-east South Africa. It is found at the edges of tropical forest and along large rivers and the sea shore where oil palms are abundant. It feeds mainly on the flesh of these palm fruits as well as other fruits and small vertebrates and invertebrates.
