The Nubian Woodpecker is distributed in eastern Africa from Sudan to Tanzania. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. It is found in dry bush and wooded savanna up to 2,100 metres.

The male in photo 1 has a red cap and red malar. the female in photo 2 has a crown black with white specks and a similarly coloured malar stripe.
