The Northern White-crowned Shrike is distributed in the Horn of Africa and south into Tanzania. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. It is found in bush country from sea level to about 1,600 metres.

It is thick-necked with a white crown and black mask. The white rump is conspicuous in flight.
