The Northern Carmine Bee-eater is distributed in Africa south of the Sahara and mainly north of the Equator stretching from Senegal to Eritrea and Tanzania. See the distribution map at Birdlife International.

It is found in dry and open savanna where it forages on the wing in an effortless twisting flight as well as feeding from a perch.

It has a blue head, rump and tail coverts as well as long tail streamers.
