The Nile Valley Sunbird is distributed in the Nile Valley as well as parts of Sudan, South Sudan, Ethiopia, Djibouti, Eritrea, Somalia and the south-west of the Arabian Peninsula. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. It is found in scrub and bushy areas.

Male Nile Valley Sunbird, Bilen, Ethiopia, January 2016 - click for larger image The male, seen here, is similar to the male Collared Sunbird H. collaris but has long tail streamers. The female is grey above and pale yellow below and lacks the tail streamers. The non-breeding male is similar to the female but sometimes has tail streamers.
