The Moorland Chat is distributed in East Africa from Ethiopia to northern Tanzania. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. It is found in rocky alpine moorland or grassland at above 2,100 metres. On Mt. Kilimanjaro it has been seen as high as 5,200 m.

It is dark brown with a wheatear-like pattern of an inverted T on the tail.

When feeding on its invertebrate prey it perches on a rock or bush before flying to ground to capture its prey.
