The Martial Eagle is distributed throughout most of Africa south of the Sahara except the Congo Basin and coastal West Africa. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. It is classified as Vulnerable because of a recent rapid decline caused mainly by shooting and trapping by farmers and by indirect poisoning.

Martial Eagle, Yabello, Ethiopia, January 2016 - click for larger image It is a very large, powerful eagle found in open areas such as desert, grassland and open woodland. It takes 5 to 6 years to reach the adult plumage shown here.

It feeds on large birds such as waterfowl, large lizards and medium sized mammals.
