Identification is aided by the fact that the Madagascar Spinetail is the only spinetail in Madagascar. See the distribution map at Birdlife International.

It is found mainly in forested areas where it hunts for insects just above the canopy or between trees.

Alfred Grandidier was a French geographer and ornithologist who wrote a 40 volume History of the Geography, Nature and Politics of Madagascar in 1876.
