The Madagascar Pratincole breeds in Madagascar on rocky islets on the coast and in rivers up to 1,500 metres. In the non-breeding season it migrates to the nearby coast of Africa. See the distribution map at Birdlife International.

With a population of less than 10,000 which is declining because of habitat loss it is classified as Vulnerable.
