The Long-tailed Ground-roller is confined to a small area of south-west Madagascar. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. It is found in semi-arid thorn scrub and tall deciduous woodland.

It feeds on invertebrates which it catches on the ground. A pair usually excavate several nest burrows but only use one of them.
