The Grey-throated Bunting is distributed in Africa south of the Sahara from Mauritania and Senegal to Eritrea. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. It is found on rocky hillsides and in open savanna with rocky outcrops.

Some authorities lump this species with Cinnamon-breasted Bunting E. tahapisi but it has grey vs black chin, throat and rear ear-coverts and a large rufous patch on the open wing apart from molecular evidence that it is a species.
