The Grey-headed Gull is distributed in Africa south of the Sahara and in eastern South America with a disjunct population in Ecuador and Peru. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. It is found along tropical and sub-tropical coasts, islands, lakes and rivers.

It is distinguished by its neat grey head when in breeding plumage, the pale eye surrounded by red, the dark red bill and red legs.
